The Chinese New Year begins on January 23rd for 15 days of celebrating — it is also the Year of the Dragon, highly respected and revered among the Asian culture as a symbol of power and luck. During this time, families get together to share special traditions and customs, including a feast on the eve of Chinese New Year with duck, pig, sweet delicacies and even firecrackers. From red paper envelopes to colorful lanterns and family meals, the Chinese New Year symbolizes a fresh start and a wish for peace and happiness. Celebrate the Year of the Dragon, on Jan. 28th during the 113th Golden Dragon Parade in Chinatown in Los Angeles or enjoy the 21st annual Lunar New Year Festival in Alhambra on Feb. 4th. Gung Hay Fat Choy!

New Year’s Resolutions To Make You Smile

Every January Americans make New Year’s resolutions with all good intentions, but we rarely keep them. We want to lose weight, exercise more, kick bad habits and well, you know the rest. Maybe in 2012 our resolutions should be more fun, like learning to do something we never experienced but always wanted to do — activities such as surfing or even a marathon. In the food department, why not try something more exotic like dragon fruit, lychees and plantains. An easy and more important resolution could be doing something nice for someone else, whether it’s giving a compliment to a friend or sponsoring a child in need. Those are the wonderful things that will make us feel good all year long! For more thoughts on New Year’s resolutions, visit http://bit.ly/newyearsresolutions.
